Cornish Kayaking was formed in 2017 by Cornish Coasteering founder Coll and instructor Henry.

From the partnership they worked over the winter of 2016 selecting routes that they could run on the low tide. Firstly they explored the possibility of running sessions from Dinham Creek however the extensive mud flats on this part of the Camel Estuary proved to be too much of an obstacle. They then decided to explore the lower reaches of the Camel Estuary and found Porthilly was the perfect location.

What is Cornish Kayaking

Kayaking with Cornish Kayaking is a great way to explore the Camel Estuary. You’ll learn the basics on the beach, have some time learning the skills on the water at the start of the session, from there we will guide you along the banks of the Estuary and our guides will talk through some history and knowledge of the local area. We will also enjoy stops along the way on the sand banks, slate beaches and if conditions allow perhaps even stand on the infamous Doombar.

On the beach learning the basics is essential to ensure your safety on the water. Our guides will show you the paddling techniques, how to get in and out of kayaks safely and the capsize drill. After this we’ll go through a kit check, tighten everything up and head onto the water. Once on the water customers will practice the skills and drills, playing a few games and the emergency stop! Our guides will then start the journey out towards the mouth of the Estuary.

The sights along the estuary are amazing rolling dunes, golden sands, Padstow harbour and various other places of interest along the way. Skimming stone beach is one of our favourite stopping points and the guides will encourage a friendly competition to see who is the best!

We are also likely to see various maritime birds such as Cormorants, Gulls and Turns. Other wildlife are the jumping Bass, the occasional seal, and other estuary based birds. Our guides will make sure that everyone has a great time on the water enjoying everything that the Camel Estuary has to offer!

Cornish Kayaking sessions are always full during the summer months so plans are ongoing to explore new routes on the high tide. This route will most likely be from Wadebridge at the opposite end of the Estuary heading up river to the wildlife sanctuary of Bishops woods. We are very excited to get this route up and running stay tuned for more updates!

Cornish Kayaking slowly grew over the course of a few years, and like Cornish Coasteering before it maintained a great quality service. After a few years Coll and Henry began to explore the possibilities of their next venture into Cornish Surfing which began in 2019. At the same time they started to work on their ideas for the next stage of the brand hence Cornish Adventure was born.
